Treasures of the Tourmaline Group

We are pleased to invite Dr. Claudio C. Milisenda to give a talk on Treasures of the Tourmaline Group.

The tourmaline group includes a number of complex boron-aluminium silicate minerals and surpasses all other gemstones by its wide range of colours. Well-formed tourmaline crystals are valued by mineral specimen collectors and cut specimens belong to the world's most popular gemstones.

Minerals of the tourmaline family belong to the most important gemstones for the industry in Idar-Oberstein, Europe’s premier coloured gemstone centre. They are constantly part of major research projects carried out by DSEF. Examples include the first detailed gemmological description of Paraiba tourmaline, one of the most sought-after coloured gemstones as well as the separation of Brazilian material from their African counterparts.

This presentation focuses on the commercially important varieties of tourmaline and discusses about origin factors, as well as treatments and imitations of tourmaline currently encountered in a gemmological laboratory.
