Luminescence of Gems

We are pleased to invite Dr. Emmanuel Fritsch to give a talk on luminescence of gems.

Luminescence is the somewhat magic emission of visible light under excitation. We will limit ourselves to what one can do with gems under a good UV light. Some gems use some of the UV energy to emit visible light. There are several necessary steps to correctly observe and evaluate the luminescence of a gem in terms of color, intensity, homogeneity, turbidity. Luminescence constitutes a unique aspect of the hidden identity of a gem. It might even last after the light is turned off, that is phosphorescence.

We will explore some fun luminescent gems, and demonstrate how the so-called phosphorescence can be truly useful for some gem identification. Also, it can be used in enhanced jewelry.
